When you think of optical transponders, you may think of such names as Alcatel, Agilent or Lucent, but don't be too quick to overlook the new guy.

Founded in 1999, GTRAN (Westlake Village, CA) designs and develops wireless and optical transmission products that enable high-speed data transfer. GTRAN has two product divisions and six design center locations. The Wireless Division provides data phones and wireless PC modem cards for wireless data standards, including IS-95B, EDGE, HDR, CDMA2000 and WCDMA. The Broadband Optoelectronic Division provides data transceivers to enable high-speed activation of telecom and datacom systems based on such standards as SONET, OC-192 and 10 Gb/s Ethernet.

GTRAN's Broadband Optoelectronic Division is developing a product portfolio to enable high-speed activation of 10 Gb/s datacom and telecom systems based on Gigabit Ethernet and SONET standards. GTRANs GT10 product line offers user-friendly functions such as single power supply operation, on-board clock generation and low power consumption. GTRAN's optical products are designed for providers who require ultra-high speed, short and medium haul data transport.

GTRAN's products include:

* GT10-1005LD: a high-performance 10Gb/s laser diode driver IC designed for use in transmitter modules for fiber optic transmission systems, such as SONET OC-192 and SDH STM-64.

* GT10-5000LA: a high performance SiGe 12.5 Gb/s limiting amplifier IC designed for use in receiver modules for fiber optic transmission systems such as SDH STM-64 and SONET OC-192.

* GT10-1310TRS and GT10-1550TRS: fully integrated, self contained 10 Gb/s electro-optical data transponders.

* GT10-1310TX: a fully integrated, self contained 10 Gb/s electro-optical data transmitter.

* GT10-RX: a fully integrated, self contained 10 Gb/s electro-optical data receiver.

GTRAN is also announcing preliminary releases of other electro-optical data transceivers:

* GT10-1550FEC: a fully integrated, self contained 10 Gb/s electro-optical data transceiver with forward error correction, DWDM and optics suitable for long reach applications.

* GT10-1310FEC: a fully integrated, self contained 10 Gb/s electro-optical data transceiver with forward error correction and optics suitable for long reach applications.

GTRAN will be completing its third round of funding and is backed by strategic technology providers, manufacturing partners and major venture capital investors. And watch for GTRAN's 40 Gig products
