Tyco Electronics announced the availability of its AccessEthernet technology for use in the United States and Asia. The technology enables carriers and multiple service operators to offer cost-effective Ethernet links of up to 100 Mbps to homes and businesses.

Tyco Electronics' AccessEthernet product set comprises customer premises and street cabinet equipment that has been specifically designed to cope with the harsh environment in which it is to be installed.

AccessEthernet products can deliver links of up to 100Mbps over fiber, or up to 10 Mbps over legacy copper circuits. The AccessEthernet switch uses a cost-effective modular architecture that enables plug-in fiber or copper downlink modules to be added as required, and includes E1/T1 "streamed data" port options. A street cabinet "legacy circuit" IP modem converts legacy voice circuits to packets for transportation over IP.

The AccessEthernet customer premises equipment consists of a low-cost integrated transceiver unit to terminate the copper or fiber drop cables plus an X.21/E1/T1 Legacy Circuit to IP modem to convert X.21/E1/T1 tributaries into a high speed Ethernet IP packet stream. This modem will enable legacy circuits at customer premises, such as PBX leased lines and videoconferencing, to be locally adapted into packets for transportation across the IP network.
