SEPTEMBER 19, 2008 -- Opnext Inc. (search for Opnext) today announced that its extended reach SFP+ module with uncooled EA-DFB will be commercially available starting in the second quarter of 2009. The release of this 10-Gbit/sec optical transceiver will expand Opnext's 10-Gbit/sec business and its portfolio of 40-km reach modules, such as SFP+ and XFP. According to the company, it is the first 40-km SFP+/XFP with uncooled EA-DFB.

"It offers more capacity, enables higher density systems, and it will help our customers realize thermal and power consumption system requirements. It will also provide a pluggable form factor for easy system maintenance and reduces power consumption by eliminating the need of a TEC. This module is a win-win for our customers," adds Kanno.
This extended reach SFP+ expands Opnext's reach in high-capacity switching, storage, and transmission systems, a market that is expected to grow to $115 million by 2009 and $150 million in 2010. The SFP+ MSA transceiver is the smallest size, simplest interface, and lowest power consumption for 10-Gbit/sec operation. The uncooled EA-DFB is suitable for either SFP+ ER or XFP-IR2 applications.
The product is MSA-based and pin-to-pin compatible. It keeps the 40-km capability in SFP+ form factor with Pc<1.25W, while keeping the same characteristics as the conventional cooled EA-DFB, say company representatives. The uncooled EA-DFB has been developed in cooperation with Hitachi's Central Research Laboratory.
