Centellax's SiGe-based 4:1 mux has a FIFO and clock multiplying unit and feeds a multi-stage amplifier at 40Gbit/s with <1.5ps rms jitter.

The companion 1:4 demux incorporates a limiting amplifier and CDR. The Broadband Driver Amplifier uses three GaAs travelling-wave amplifier chips to develop >30dB gain and 7.5V output for driving a lithium niobate modulator. The amplifier cascade has <1.0ps rms jitter and <8ps rise/fall times.

A 16:1 mux and 1:16 demux chip-set will be sampled soon.www.centellax.com

Version 3.0 of RSoft Design Group's MetroWAND software — a PC-based tool for designing and modelling metro networks — has added mesh architecture enhancement. This makes it the only commercial ring and mesh tool to address the complex multi-service nature of metro network design.

MetroWAND determines whether ring or mesh is the right choice by building a cost-optimised network factoring in protected, unprotected, and pre-emptible equipment and demands, as well as various restoration schemes.

Xanoptix has developed advanced packaging techniques allowing it to integrate into small-form-factor packages its high-density XTM Series transceiver chip with the following silicon electrical cross-point switches:

  • Analog Devices' 34x34 Xstream Crosspoint AD8152;
  • Vitesse's 72x72 VSC3139; and
  • Velio's 72x72 VC3002.

The switches can be configured to have both electrical and optical I/O and to simultaneously perform a full add/drop.

The technology enables use of optical interfaces in a wide array of functional elements such as network processors, memory chips, and microprocessors. www.xanoptix.com

An option for Anritsu's MP1777A jitter analyser enables jitter evaluation at 2.677, 5.354 and 10.709GHz standard telecom, FEC and OTN rates, as well as OC-48/STM-16, OC-96/STM-32, and OC-192/STM-64 bit rates.

It offers the required jitter bandwidth of up to 80MHz, and up to 3200Ulp-p jitter modulation amplitude for 10Gbit/s and FEC rates. Jitter signal generation and measurement permit accurate evaluation of characteristics such as jitter tolerance, jitter transfer, and output jitter.

The MP1777A can be integrated with MP1763C/MP1764C 12.5Gbit/s BERT systems. It can also evaluate jitter in terrestrial and submarine network equipment when combined with MP9677B E/O, and O/E converter.

* Anritsu has three separate MU967703A Clock Recovery Units supporting 9.953 and 10.664Gbit/s FEC rates and enabling the MP9677B to evaluate OTN 10.709Gbit/s rates. This produces the only combined E/O and O/E converter with the 80MHz clock recovery bandwidth for accurate jitter measurement at 10Gbit/s.

Fitel's S199M-24 24-Fibre Ribbon Splicer has a modified stripping and cleaving tool, allowing splicing of up to 24 fibres simultaneously in 24-count ribbon (rather than in two sets of 12), halving splicing time.

AllWave and other OFS single-mode fibres have improved geometry specifications that impact splice quality and performance (including tighter cladding diameter variation and core to clad concentricity, as well as improvement in fibre curl), enhancing its capabilities for maximum splicing performance.

Coinciding with the introduction of its PureBand single-mode, PureMetro non-zero dispersion shifted single-mode, and PureGuide non-zero dispersion shifted single-mode fibres, Sumitomo Electric Lightwave Ltd has added three new fibre types to its existing single-mode, loose tube and ribbon cable product designs.

The new types will meet demand for enhanced-performance fibre in CWDM, DWDM, and other high-data-rate applications. The new cables will augment its existing conventional single-mode fibre optic product lines to provide more cost-effective options and flexibility when meeting both higher-speed data rate and greater bandwidth requirements.www.sumitomoelectric.com

The new ProBond bonding option for Exfo's ProAlign 5000 fully integrated component assembly workstation for active alignment and assembly of photonics components involves automatically dispensing a controlled amount of adhesive, then curing the adhesive with light.

The new bonding option increases repeatability, which shortens the R&D phase and increases yield and throughput while providing higher quality and performance of advanced optical components, including planar lightwave circuits, switches and transceivers.

Also, integrating ProBond with the ProAlign 5000 workstation automates the entire pigtail assembly process. www.exfo.com

PerkinElmer Optoelectronics says its OCT 8000 Optical Component Tester is the first all-parameter test system that can analyse a full range of component measurements over multiple channels simultaneously in a single, fast wavelength scan.

The OCT8000 allows a wide range of rapid delay and loss measurements, including group delay, chromatic dispersion, polarisation mode dispersion, polarisation-dependent loss, insertion loss and return loss in up to 256 channels in one instrument.

It allows quick collation of many measurements into a single report with only one fibre connection step. Also, since it is modular, users can buy a simple two-channel system for R&D, then upgrade the number of measurements and channels for production.

Marconi's BXR-48000 single, protocol-agnostic multiservice packet switch–router platform provides voice, video and data transport at speeds up to OC-192c (10Gbit/s).

The plaform also provides scalable, reliable and flexible solutions to help protect legacy service revenue streams while rolling out profitable, next-generation IP, Ethernet, 3G and packetised voice solutions and services.

The BXR-48000 concurrently and natively supports connectionless IP routing, MPLS and ATM switching, providing smooth, low-risk and complete migration for carriers offering new IP services while protecting the profitability of existing revenue-generating services. It uses a carrier-class, single-stage, deterministically non-blocking architecture. Its capacity and port density also allows scaling of existing networks and reductions in capital and operational expenditures. www.marconi.com

Vitesse Semiconductor Corp's VSC3138 (40x40) and VSC3139 (72x72) fully non-blocking, asynchronous cross-point switches carry broadband data streams at up to 3.6Gbit/s.

The VSC3138 and VSC3139 are built on the same core technology as the VSC3140 (144x144) and feature multiple programming ports (parallel, serial, and a secondary serial port) with multicast, broadcast, and striping programming modes (the latter enhanced to enable a rate four times faster than current solutions for switch programming of 10Gbit/s applications using 4x2.5Gbit/s signals or XAUI applications using 4x3.125Gbit/s signals).

The 3.6Gbit/s data rate per channel capability enables O-E-O switching of 40Gbit/s VSR data rates when routed as 12x3.6Gbit/s signals.

Nufern's EDFC-980-HP-80 C-band erbium-doped 80mm fibre is for use in components that require a tighter bend radius for compact packaging (e.g. in smaller-size amplifiers for metro networks) and can be powered with 980 or 1480nm pumps. It has peak absorption near 1530nm of 6.0±1.0dB/m, cut-off wavelength of 920±50nm, and typical numerical aperture of 0.23. Core-clad concentricity error is <0.3µm for low splice loss.

Designed for more uniform grating writing in WDM, Nufern's CMF Cladding Mode Free photosensitive fibre virtually eliminates all cladding modes, allowing higher channel density and improved signal quality. CMF fibre is mode-matched to SMF28. It offers tight mechanical tolerances and core-clad concentricity, as well as providing high lot-to-lot uniformity.

Essient Photonics' EA-MDA-10G Electro Absorption Modulator–Detector with Integrated Amplification for 10Gbit/s will sample in limited quantities in Q1/2003.

The device has:

  • a drive voltage of 100mV (compared to 3–5V), simplifying its control electronics;
  • power consumption of 1W (compared to 10W);
  • less than one tenth the space used by corresponding discrete components.

The device enables five discrete components to be replaced with a single closely integrated device.

The EA-MDA-10G is made using indium phosphide and operates through the combination of a waveguide with a resonant tunneling diode.
