China Petrochemical Corporation selects Lucent to build next-generation transmission network

June 8, 2004 Beijing--China Petrochemical Corporation (Sinopec) has selected Lucent's next-generation optical transmission technology to improve the communications system in its Southwest Products Pipeline Communications System. This marks the first deployment of Lucent's optical transmission equipment in China's petrochemical industry.

June 8, 2004 Beijing--China Petrochemical Corporation (Sinopec) has selected Lucent's next-generation optical transmission technology to improve the communications system in its Southwest Products Pipeline Communications System. This marks the first deployment of Lucent's optical transmission equipment in China's petrochemical industry. Wantel Technologies Hong Kong, a member enterprise of Wantel United International Holdings Company Limited and a Lucent Business Partner in China, managed the contract, providing project management support.

Sinopec Southwest Products Pipeline is the company's first refined oil products pipeline. It stretches 1,691 km across four provinces in Southwest China, from Kunming in Yunnan Province to Maoming in Guangdong Province, carrying refined oil products from refineries to local centers. There are numerous control points along this pipeline that provide data about the oil flowing through the pipeline. Data needs to be collected at each of these control points and sent back to a central control and monitoring point. Lucent's optical networking equipment will help Sinotec monitor and manage the flow of oil in its Southwest Products Pipeline Communications System.

Lucent will supply the Metropolis ADM multiservice mux and network management software to build a cost-effective multi-service transmission network that delivers voice, data and video traffic with enhanced capacity and service quality equivalent to the telecommunications network. Lucent's optical solution also will help the customer optimize the communication systems used for the data acquisition, video monitoring and video conferencing, and control and command systems that serve Sinopec's daily production and operations.

Lucent's optical equipment has been widely deployed in China. The company's customer-base ranges from telecom service providers to large enterprises in telecom, CATV, power, transportation, and public security sectors.

The Metropolis ADM multiservice mux is part of the Metropolis family of metro optical solutions designed to eliminate bottlenecks in existing metro networks. It is an integrated Ethernet over SDH metro access multiplexer, which enables service providers to migrate seamlessly from existing networks to data-aware packet networks. Adding data services to optical networks increases revenue potential for customers and helps them offer a wide variety of new Ethernet services. Metropolis ADM integrates seamlessly into carriers' existing infrastructure, avoiding the need for an overlay network built for new services. Its low power consumption and small footprint also helps carriers save on operating expenses. Metropolis ADM (Universal and Compact shelves) currently has more than 1,500 systems deployed with more than 90 customers.

Sinopec also will be deploying the WaveStar integrated transport management - subnetwork controller, which provides element and network management functions as part of Lucent's operations support system for managing optical networks.
