Optillion launches 10-GbE long reach transceivers

June 10, 2004 Stockholm, Sweden -- Optillion, developer of high-speed fiber-optic transceiver technology, has extended its line of 10-Gigabit Ethernet (10-GbE) XENPAK modules with the introduction of its new 10GBASE-DWDM module, the TOP 8080, and its 10GBASE-ZR module, the TOP 5080.

June 10, 2004 Stockholm, Sweden -- < a href=http://www.optillion.com>Optillion, developer of high-speed fiber-optic transceiver technology, has extended its line of 10-Gigabit Ethernet (10-GbE) XENPAK modules with the introduction of its new 10GBASE-DWDM module, the TOP 8080, and its 10GBASE-ZR module, the TOP 5080. With a range of 80 km, these enable 10 GbE to be a cost-efficient transport alternative to SONET OC-192 long haul links over dark singlemode fiber.

For high bandwidth applications, such as video-on-demand (VoD), these transceivers enable content distribution between cities up to 80 km, as an alternative to high-capacity satellite links and OC-192 transport. The TOP 8080 and TOP 5080 provide high-speed serial link signaling at an optical data rate of 10.3 Gbits/sec, and the TOP 8080 has 1550-nm DWDM wavelengths as specified by ITU-T at 100-GHz channel spacing.

Deploying lower cost Ethernet routers and switches decreases the need for equipment with expensive Packet-over-SONET OC-192 data conversion interfaces, say company representatives. "We are very happy to enable the lower cost Ethernet deployment by expanding our 10-GbE pluggable XENPAK family with long reach transceivers and DWDM capabilities," reports Optillion's CTO Patrik Evaldsson.

For manufacturers of high-end switches, routers, and test equipment, Optillion offers various pluggable optical interfaces for 10-Gbit/sec Ethernet XENPAK for singlemode fiber. In addition to the new modules, Optillion offers 10-km 10GBASE-LR, 40-km 10GBASE-ER, and WAN PHY 10GBASE-LW. The latter module, demonstrated at the recent OFC Exhibit, is a cost-effective Packet-over-SONET (POS) alternative for a 10-Gbit/sec uplink to the SONET OC-192 network, allowing framed Ethernet to be transported using existing DWDM equipment.

Optillion will sample the 10GBASE-DWDM transceivers to additional customers in July. Volume production ramp-up will be later in the third quarter of 2004. The 10GBASE-ZR module will be in production during the fourth quarter. Both transceivers comply to and provide capabilities beyond the 10-GbE standard IEEE 802.3 and the XENPAK multi-source agreement.
