October 4, 2004 Denmark--NKT Integration has announced the development of planar lightwave circuit (PLC) based triplexer transceivers designed for use in passive optical networks (PONs). The transceivers support both ITU-T FSAN and IEEE 802.3ah standards for triple-play (voice, data and analog video) applications.
Developed in cooperation with Samsung Electronics, the triplexer transceiver is the first solution based on a PLC chip with embedded PLC filter. Since the announcement of this joint effort at OFC 2004 in Los Angeles, the initial development of a broadband PON transceiver has been extended to support the Gigabit PON and Ethernet PON standards.
The integrated approach taken to incorporate the active devices on a silicon platform, together with the advantage of the intrinsic wavelength filter, reduces the number of assembly steps, providing a cost competitive solution. The PLC filter is based on a unique design, which allows a compact size without compromising on performance. The transceiver package includes an analog video amplifer for the analog video channel.
General availability of the PLC-based triplexer transceiver is scheduled for the beginning of 2005, but engineering samples will be available in November 2004. NKT Integration is exhibiting in booth 1015 at the FTTH Council Conference 2004 held in in Orlando, FL, this week.
