Esat Telecom (Dublin, Ireland) will build an all-digital telecommunications network in its home country that will comprise a national fiber-optic backbone and local access networks. The company selected Nortel (Brampton, ON, Canada) to provide equipment for the network, which will deliver such services as virtual private network, call center, broadcast video transfer, and videoconferencing. Preliminary work began last year, with the first network ring completed last October. Additional rings in Dublin and in other Irish cities are planned. Nortel will provide 2.5-Gbit/sec stm-16 sdh multiplexers for the backbone fiber network, plus customer premises multiplexers. Street cabinets, an inm Broadband network management system, and a dms-100 switch are also on the delivery list.
