Lightscape Networks deploys XDM optical platform

Aug. 17, 2001
Aug. 17, 2001--Lightscape Networks, an ECI Telecom company and provider of optical networking, announced it will supply a large local exchange carrier with next-generation optical networking technology.

Lightscape Networks, an ECI Telecom company (Nasdaq:ECIL) and an international provider of optical networking, announced it has signed a contract to supply a large local exchange carrier with next-generation optical networking technology.

Open Joint-Stock Company "Moscow City Telephone Network" (OJSC "MGTS", Russia), which provides access to the public network for other services providers, will implement Lightscape Networks XDM intelligent, hybrid optical platform within its metropolitan area network to eliminate bottlenecks and to support regional voice, data and broadband services.

This move represents the latest development in an ongoing project by MGTS to invest in and improve its network, building upon the previous deployment of several hundred SDH multiplexers from ECI Telecom's Lightscape Networks. The implementation of Lightscape Networks' XDM optical platform will greatly increase the capacity of its interconnecting rings, while offering advanced optical networking features and support for multiple network topologies. Benefits from this initiative will include a faster, more flexible and scalable infrastructure, 100 percent compatibility with MGTS' existing operating equipment and comprehensive end-to-end traffic management.

The scalability built into the XDM system represents an advantage to MGTS in its development of new services. The system's single platform architecture enables it to be upgraded while in service using cards that are slotted into the basic unit to give instant capacity increases or easy, cost-effective migration to optical services without the need for years of forward planning.

Lightscape Networks' XDM platform provides carriers with an easy migration path to next-generation broadband services, and multi-service support, within a single data-aware device, offering carriers with a wide capacity range within a single shelf. Designed specifically for the metropolitan area environment, XDM offers a cost-effective way of connecting multi-service broadband subscribers to the transport backbone without requiring a massive initial investment in numerous discrete systems (DWDM multiplexers, SDH/SONET ADMs, edge data switching and optical switching). XDM is the only multi-function metro platform for voice, video and data that scales cost effectively to 10Gbps, for both ring and mesh architectures.
