Oplink delivers BWDM and polarization maintaining fiber component products

Oct. 11, 2001
Oct. 11, 2001--Oplink Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq: OPLK), a designer and manufacturer of innovative optical components and integrated optical subsystems, announced the availability of the Terra Band Wavelength Division Multiplexing (BWDM) Products. Oplink also announced a broad line of polarization maintaining (PM) fiber component products for improving optical network performance.

Oplink Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq: OPLK), a designer and manufacturer of innovative optical components and integrated optical subsystems, announced the availability of the Terra Band Wavelength Division Multiplexing (BWDM) Products. In addition, the company announced it has commenced volume shipments of BWDM products to major metro DWDM system providers.

BWDM technology is particularly important in next-generation metropolitan area optical networking design as it enables multiplexing of bands (typically 4-8 channels) spaced at 100 GHz or 50 GHz, thereby improving performance and reducing the overall networking costs.

Oplink also announced a broad line of polarization maintaining (PM) fiber component products for improving optical network performance.

"PM fiber component technology enables polarization multiplexing that doubles the optical network capacity within the same optical bandwidth compared to traditional signal transmission technologies " explained Dr. Mark Wang, Product Line Manager, "This further pushes the limit on the amount of traffic a single fiber can carry. While still being tested in research laboratories, polarization multiplexing is one of the most promising technologies to power future optical networks."

Oplink is now offering several PM fiber components such as PM fiber Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexer, PM fiber optical circulator, PM fiber optical interleaver, PM fiber isolator and PM fiber tap coupler. Other PM fiber components based on Oplink's existing products are also available upon request. In addition to these new PM fiber products, Oplink has already been manufacturing PM beam combiners in high volume, which are widely used in both Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifiers and Raman Amplifiers.

In addition to having PM fiber components, Oplink's PM products offer excellent optical performance, high reliability and high extinction ratio. Oplink's fiber optic design and packaging expertise enables the development of high-speed optical leading edge products.
