Submarine cable

Members of the Pan American cable consortium are planning to issue a request for proposals for a $300-million, 7000-route-kilometer submarine cabling system that may go out to bid in September 1996. The 4-fiber cable will operate at 2.5 gigabits per second and use wavelength-division multiplexers and submerged optical amplifiers. Branching units are expected to be 100 to 200 km offshore in deep water to eliminate cable cuts that occur near the coast.
