A new EDFA that combines eight integrated amplifiers in a single package sharing common pump lasers allows the amplifiers to be configured independently either serially or in parallel. Connected in parallel, the GainNet M8 multiport amplifier provides gain for eight independent signals. Connected in series, the amplifiers deliver up to 1W of output power. Sharing pump diodes between the amplifiers provides both pump redundancy and a reduced cost. The GainNet M8 can incorporate components, such as gain flattening and dispersion-compensating filters.
