Corning Cable Systems rolls out modular OptiVisor 400 OTDR
March 30, 2005 Hickory, NC -- Corning Cable Systems has introduced its OptiVisor 400 Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR), which, according to the company, provides full OTDR testing in a rugged, portable unit. The device supports field-interchangeable multimode, singlemode, and combination modules, which can be switched in the field without using tools. The company says the unit can provide full test results in as little as 45 seconds.
The unit's 7.7-inch color LCD touch screen displays both trace and event tables. The standard unit provides internal memory for storage of up to 700 traces, eliminating the need for a hard drive. For extra storage, the unit's mainframe contains a floppy drive and PCMCIA port.
The unit's modules provide a standard continuous wave source, while the mainframe incorporates an optional power meter. The company says these features can reduce the overall amount of test equipment required for system qualification by integrating power-through testing directly onto the OTDR platform. An option visual fault locator (VFL), useful for fiber identification and troubleshooting, is available on all modules.
The device supports three testing modes. Auto Mode allows parameters to be selected automatically, and is suitable for basic OTDR applications or occasional users. The Advanced Mode offers more set-up and measurement capabilities for more experienced OTDR users. In Template Trace Mode, a user can create a template for comparison with other traces, to enable quick testing of multiple fibers.
