Fiber-optic oscilloscope

The tia-500i is a fiber-optic probe that mounts directly on the bnc input of an oscilloscope. Energizing the unit, the device reproduces the optical signal presented to it onto the oscilloscope screen. The probe, with bandwidth of 125 MHz, can be used for a check of the output of a fiber-optic communications or data link, the operation of a laser source, or the signal from an optical transmitter. The unit transforms the oscilloscope into an optical instrument. Electrical isolation is provided with an internal 9V lithium battery, and the unit is housed in a metal case as further shielding. The device can detect both 850- and 1300-nm wavelengths, has a gain selection switch, and provides peak response values of approximately 1000 to 100,000V/W. AC coupling between stages can be switch-selected in order to examine weak signals in the presence of a strong DC component. Fiber connection options include ST or FC receptacle. The probe sells for $495.
