June 22, 2005 London, UK -- Marconi today announced that Magyar Telekom, (formerly known as Matáv), Hungary's incumbent telecommunications and Internet service provider, will upgrade its existing SDH transport network using Marconi's OMS1664, OMS840, and SMA1/4UC multiservice optical platforms, as well as the company's ServiceOn network management system.
Using Marconi's multiservice SDH products, the operator says it will achieve significant operational cost savings through network simplification. The operator says the contract will also enable it to add high-value data services, such as Ethernet, to its service portfolio, while protecting revenue streams from traditional TDM leased¿line packages. The contract includes a three year maintenance agreement, covering the operator's existing optical network.
Marconi says the dual SDH and data bus architecture of its OMS1664 platform will allow the operator's network to efficiently evolve from TDM¿based traffic to Ethernet and IP-dominated traffic. According to the company, although it will initially be deployed as a crossconnect, the platform will eventually provide the operator with a single platform that combines data communications with next¿generation SDH and WDM technologies. The network's edge will be equipped with the SMA1/4UC platform, which the company says is capable of supporting both Ethernet and Plesiochronous Digital Hierarchy services. The OMS840 is a customer-located multiservice device that will be used to support mixed E1 (2-Mbit/sec) and Ethernet (10/100-Mbit/sec) interfaces.
Through local partners Montel and CTDI Hungary, Marconi will also provide Magyar Telekom with an ongoing network management service, to include installation and commissioning, and repairs. Marconi will also undertake maintenance support, NMS upgrades, and consultancy for the operator. The operator's multiservice delivery network and existing SMA equipment will be managed by the company's ServiceOn network management system.
"Leveraging our nationwide network with Marconi's next-generation optical platforms, [our] existing data and voice products will be able to run alongside new Ethernet services,"concludes Peter Janeck, CTO of Magyar Telekom. "This will allow us to expand our customer base, [while delivering] high levels of service to our existing customers at the same time."
