The FI-100 Fiber Identifier can detect non-intrusively the presence of light or signal in a fiber-optic cable. When the device is clamped onto the fiber being tested, a small macrobend is induced to cause a small portion of light to spill onto the detector's diodes.

This product addresses a burgeoning need to conveniently identify light in bend-insensitive fibers. Judge's Comment.
The FI-100 Fiber Identifier can detect non-intrusively the presence of light or signal in a fiber-optic cable. When the device is clamped onto the fiber being tested, a small macrobend is induced to cause a small portion of light to spill onto the detector's diodes. Specific fiber adapters are used so the optimum bend radii can be placed on the fiber-optic cable.

This process permits the maximum sensitivity for detecting low level signals that might be emitted from bend-insensitive fibers. The non-intrusive technique allows the technician to check if light is present in the cable without disconnecting a potentially critical service. The insertion loss that is induced during the test will not lead to an alarm condition or disrupt signal transmission, Greenlee says.
