Sunrise Telecom Incorporated (Nasdaq: SRTI), a provider of service verification equipment for telecommunications and Internet networks, announces that the handheld SunSet OCx at OC-48 is now shipping. At three pounds, Sunrise claims the OCx is the smallest and lightest OC-48 optical network analyzer. Designed for portability and ease of use, the OCx enables network service providers, network installation/provisioning crews, and laboratory engineers to economically take their test equipment wherever their network takes them.
The OC-48 version joins the growing OCx product family to provide economical test solutions. By incorporating optics technology with the design heritage of the SunSet product line, the OCx can achieve more in less space. The compact, handheld unit includes a broad range of SONET/BERT transmission analysis and service verification capabilities. In addition to a complete SONET payload and overhead analysis, the OCx supports ATM, GR-303, ISDN and VF dialing and analysis.
The SunSet OCx has transmit and receive test interfaces for T1 (1.544 Mbps), T3 (45 Mbps), STS-1 (51 Mbps), OC-3 (155 Mbps), OC-12 (622 Mbps) and OC-48 (2.5 Gbps). Testing can be performed on the SONET concatenated payload, or any DS3, DS1, VT1.5, or DS0 channel within a SONET signal. A drop-and-insert from the optical port to the electrical ports allows operators to perform testing of network multiplexers and demultiplexers. In-service network performance can be determined in a variety of ways, most commonly by counting parity errors built into the SONET overhead definition, including B3, B2, B1 and BIP-2. For out-of-service testing, a number of industry-standard stress patterns can be inserted into any payload. The OCx reports and generates SONET and T-carrier alarms. The incoming SONET overhead bytes can be viewed, while the outgoing SONET overhead bytes can be manipulated. The OCx also performs extensive 64 kbps channelized VF level, frequency, and noise measurements.
At only three pounds, the OCx is small and light. The battery-powered package appeals to telecommunications field professional who travels. With the OC-48 data rate finding its ways into the access portion of the network, there is a real need for a true handheld test set at 2.5 Gbps. Since OC-48 is commonly used in DWDM systems, the SunSet OCx is an ideal choice for DWDM transmission system installation, provisioning and maintenance. The true Bit Error Rate (BER) for a particular wavelength can be determined, which supplements the derived BER typically made by measuring optical signal to noise ratio. And, the SunSet OCx can be conveniently upgraded in the field by replacing a software cartridge.
Lead-time for the OCx at OC-48 is eight to ten weeks ARO. Lead-time for the OCx at OC-3 and OC-12 is four to six weeks ARO.
The SunSet OCx will be on display at the Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exhibit (OFC) in booth 1753, Anaheim Convention Center, March 19-21, 2001.
