Telefónica extends Distributed Cell Site Gateway deployments to Peru

Oct. 22, 2020
Telefónica is one of the main supporters of the DCSG effort and had previously announced its intention to deploy the technology in its networks as part of its Fusión Project effort.

Telefónica Peru will commercially deploy the Disaggregated Cell Site Gateway (DCSG) developed by the Telecom Infra Project (TIP). The deployment will use both hardware and software from Infinera (NASDAQ: INFN), the technology vendor states.

As its name implies, the DCSG offers an open, disaggregated, and software-controlled option for supporting mobile services roll outs, including for 5G. Telefónica is one of the main supporters of the DCSG effort and had previously announced its intention to deploy the technology in its networks as part of its Fusión Project effort (see "Telefónica rolls out Telecom Infra Project’s Disaggregated Cell Site Gateway").

The latest roll out will see Telefónica Peru deploy Infinera’s DRX-30 hardware and Converged Network Operating System (CNOS) software to support 4G and 5G infrastructure as well as fixed services (see "Infinera adopts Telecom Infra Project Disaggregated Cell Site Gateway"). The deployments will include configurations that support 300 Gbps and 600 Gbps using stacked hardware.

“The DCSG solution deployed is comprised of open and disaggregated hardware and software from Infinera, enabling Telefónica to prepare its nationwide transport network for upcoming new services, which will help increase the agility in the introduction of new functionalities and drive operational efficiencies,” said Victor López, network architect at Telefónica and co-chair of the Open Optical Packet Transport group at TIP in which the DCSG development work was performed.

“Infinera is excited to work alongside TIP to develop open, disaggregated solutions to support the delivery of high-capacity mobile transport solutions for the 5G era,” said Mikko Hannula, vice president, engineering and product management at Infinera. “The expansion of the DCSG network deployment with Telefónica Peru further validates the commercial viability of DCSG for large-scale commercial rollouts in diverse and competitive markets.”
