APRIL 15, 2008 -- Vectron International (search for Vectron) has announced the general availability of the VS-705, the fifth-generation of its voltage-controlled SAW oscillator (VCSO) product. New features of the VS-705 VCSO include an expanded frequency range and several improved performance and power management capabilities that support customers' "green" initiatives.

The VS-705 offers customers an expanded frequency range (120 MHz to 850 MHz) in a 5.0x7.5x2.5-mm LCC package. Previously, frequencies between 120 MHz to 500 MHz were only offered in a 9.0x14.0x4.5-mm package and frequencies between 500 MHz to 850 MHz were supported in a 5.0x7.5x2.5-mm LCC package.

The VCSO is optimized for use in phase-locked loop (PLL) circuits that require superior jitter filtering and a wider tuning range (±100 ppm APR), including high-speed data transmission applications such as synchronous Ethernet, Fibre Channel, traditional SONET/SDH optical networking, and high clock rate base stations. Additionally, the new
VSCO meets the needs of the latest generation of DACs and ADCs, which require a very clean reference signal, Vectron says.

Unlike the latest digital phase-locked loop (DPLL) technologies, which at a minimum have 2X the phase jitter as well as spurious modes, the VS-705 uses a high Q SAW design, which results in spurious-free phase jitter of < 125 fsec-rms, Vectron asserts. This enables transmission network engineers to achieve improved system BER performance and lower accumulated jitter generation over interconnected network equipment.

Key features of the VCSO include:

  • 5.0x7.5x2.5-mm LCC package
  • operating frequency range of 120 MHz to 850 MHz
  • +3.3-V power supply; +2.5-V power supply available 3Q08
  • available with differential LVDS or LVPECL outputs
  • ultra low jitter
  • spurious suppression of 90 dBc
  • tri-state output select.
The VS-705 is currently available to order. Pricing is dependent upon specified tuning range (APR of either ±50 or ±100 ppm) and output frequency.
