Poll: Cable ups its fiber broadband play
Please let us know your thoughts on whether you are a cable operator pursuing a transition to fiber-to-the-home (FTTH). As Tier 1 telcos like AT&T and Verizon, as well as Tier 2 telcos, scale their fiber broadband networks, cable operators are following suit to remain competitive after holding a dominant broadband position when telcos primarily offered copper-based DSL. Cable operators are migrating from legacy DOCSIS-over-HFC networks by building new fiber lines or overbuilding existing ones to deliver faster symmetrical speeds, leveraging PON technologies such as XGS-PON (10 Gbps) and 25G-PON.
This trend is being driven by both Tier 1 and Tier 2 cable operators. Charter (Spectrum) and Comcast (Xfinity) are expanding fiber footprints, often integrating them with their wireless (mobile) services to offer bundled discounts. Likewise, regional cable operators like WOW! and Breezeline are actively building new fiber networks in their service areas.
Cable companies are embracing FTTH to not only to remain competitive but also to improve network quality and support future broadband demand.
