MAY 29, 2008 -- Japanese telecommunications service provider Softbank Telecom Corp. has chosen MRV Communications' (search for MRV) Fiber Driver optical multi-service platform as the basis for its country-wide ATM access network and has completed deployment across the country.
Softbank Telecom says it built the Fiber Driver network using a unique bi-directional single-fiber capability that allowed it to reduce its fiber needs overall and reduce its operating expenditures from the beginning of the project. The network includes more than several thousand Fiber Driver demarcation devices and leverages the system's link monitoring capabilities coupled with its Operations, Administration and Maintenance (OAM) management framework for service-level assurance.
"This network marks one of our largest installations worldwide with a tier-one carrier and demonstrates that the high-performance and feature-rich Fiber Driver platform can scale to serve the needs of very large networks," contends Noam Lotan, president and CEO of MRV Communications. "Softbank Telecom Corp.'s implementation of our Fiber Driver optical multi-service platform and bi-directional single-fiber connections demonstrates the demand among carriers to have an easily manageable platform that gives the company the ability to dynamically offer new services to its subscribers."
The flexible and modular architecture of the Fiber Driver chassis gives Softbank Telecom Corp. an optical multi-service capability that will allow it to change the protocol, data rate, or distance of its network links with minimal hardware changes. MRV says the versatility of the system ensures the implementation will continue to produce ongoing savings in operating and capital expenditures as Softbank Telecom progressively grows its market share in Japan and more circuits are deployed.
MRV's Fiber Driver optical multi-service product line provides a range of functionalities like services demarcation, media conversion, signal repeating, and fiber-optimization, including coarse and dense WDM capabilities. Both managed and unmanaged systems are available, including rack-mount, modular systems and desktop systems. MRV representatives say the Fiber Driver line includes several families of products with the flexibility of hundreds of combinations and system options for any type of optical or copper technology, covering virtually every protocol in use in networking today.
All Fiber Driver products, together with support, were provided to Softbank Telecom through Nihon Cornet Technology, K.K, MRV's master distributor in Japan.
