Windstream automates wavelength service provisioning

Windstream (NASDAQ: WIN) is automating managed wavelength service provisioning across its multivendor network via Ciena's (NYSE: CIEN) Blue Planet orchestration software, according to the technology vendor. The orchestration capabilities will enable Windstream to use its fiber-optic network as a programmable resource to improve the delivery of managed Gigabit Ethernet, 10 Gigabit Ethernet, and 100 Gigabit Ethernet wavelength services to its wholesale, enterprise, media, and web-scale customers, Ciena adds.

Windstream used a DevOps-style approach to developing and implementing the automation capabilities, Ciena says (see "Ciena says DevOps toolkit simplifies Blue Planet SDN/NFV virtual service creation"). The process included collaboration among multiple vendors that achieved its goal in less than three months. The service provider is integrating Blue Planet's orchestration capabilities with third-party SDN controllers to enable service orchestration across both long-haul and metro infrastructure.

"At Windstream, we are investing in strategic technologies that enable us to deliver flexible, on-demand services across our multi-vendor network," explained Jeff Small, the service provider's head of engineering. "We selected Ciena's Blue Planet orchestration solution because of the richness and breadth of the technology, and its ability to grow with us as we automate other layers of the network and deliver agile, virtualized services to our customers. Abstracting the complexity of service delivery across our diverse, multi-vendor network, unlocks a future where we can focus more on the richness of our customer's experience and less on the operations of that network."
