Xtera says it has received a contract from the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA), an agency of the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), to build a new regional submarine network. According to information posted on the Defense Department's website, the undersea cable will link Guantanamo in Cuba to Puerto Rico. The contract is the second DISA has granted to Xtera; the first, awarded in 2014, was reported to involve a submarine cable link to Guantanamo as well (see "Xtera to supply submarine network equipment for DISA undersea cable").
The non-competitive, firm-fixed-price contract has a face value of $36,540,732 over the two-year base period that runs from August 22, 2017 through August, 21 2019. There also are five one-year options that could bring the total face value of the award to $43,139,763.
The contract calls for Xtera to provide a turnkey undersea system that will include subsea optical repeaters, the company's Nu-Wave Optima Submarine Line Terminal Equipment (SLTE), fiber-optic cable, and all marine services.
