Greenlee Textron Inc., a Textron Inc. (NYSE: TXT) company, has unveiled the Greenlee Communications Micro OPM. The fiber-optic test instrument combines an optical power meter (OPM) and visual fault locator (VFL) into a single unit. Greenlee expects the Micro OPM to prove beneficial in FTTx, other telco and CATV, and LAN/WAN fiber-optic network troubleshooting applications.

The OPM part of the Micro OPM measures the optical power and insertion loss of a fiber using an InGaAs detector calibrated at wavelengths from 850 to 1625 nm. The unit features tone detect at 270 Hz, 1 kHz, and 2 kHz as well for measuring all common wavelengths and identifying injected tones from compatible sources, says Greenlee. The OPM is available in standard Telco (+6 to -70 dBm) and cable MSO (+26 to -50 dBm) power ranges.

The VFL, meanwhile, leverages a 650-nm 1-mW laser to safely detect macro-bends, contaminated or faulty connectors, and broken or damaged fibers. A white LED provides illumination for tasks in dimly lit locations.
