Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS), the cloud services provider that is part of the Amazon.com group (NASDAQ: AMZN), says it will improve its services in Italy through the construction of data centers in the country. The data centers will help AWS create what it calls the AWS Europe region (Milan), which will have three “availability zones.”

AWS currently operates 57 availability zones in 19 geographic regions globally. Five of these are or will soon be in Europe: France, Germany, Ireland, the United Kingdom, and Sweden (the last to be inaugurated by the end of this year).

In addition to those in the Milan region, AWS plans to add another 12 availability zones in four regions sometime between the end of this year and the first half of 2020. The four regions comprise Bahrain, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, South Africa and, as mentioned, Sweden. AWS ties these regions together via a widespread web of connectivity that includes submarine cable networks (see, for example, "Amazon Web Services signs with Hawaiki Submarine Cable").

The company says establishment of the Milan area zones will enable its customers to manage workloads and archive data in Italy, offering end users even lower latency.
