Fujitsu, UT Dallas to demo Open ROADM at SC18

Fujitsu Network Communications, Inc. and the University of Texas at Dallas (UT Dallas) will partner to demonstrate multivendor interoperability within a fiber-optic network with platform compliant with the Open ROADM Multi-Source Agreement (MSA). The demo, which will include software-defined networking (SDN) orchestration and control, will take place during this week’s SC18 Conference and Exhibition in Dallas.

Fujitsu Network Communications, Inc. and the University of Texas at Dallas (UT Dallas) will partner to demonstrate multivendor interoperability within a fiber-optic network with platform compliant with the Open ROADM Multi-Source Agreement (MSA). The demo, which will include software-defined networking (SDN) orchestration and control, will take place during this week’s SC18 Conference and Exhibition in Dallas.

Driven originally by AT&T, the Open ROADM MSA defines a disaggregated, open ROADM architecture (see “AT&T field tests Open ROADM technology”). Fujitsu was part of the original team that helped AT&T prove the Open ROADM concept (see “Fujitsu details AT&T Open ROADM field trial participation”) and is a member of the Open ROADM MSA.

In Dallas, UT Dallas will operate a fiber network with ROADM and transponder blades from Fujitsu and other vendors. The network will run applications at 100 Gbps over an OpenDaylight SDN controller. The system will be connected via open APIs to a programmable optical network (PROnet) SDN orchestrator that UT Dallas developed. The orchestrator will autonomously create an on-demand optical circuit over the Open ROADM network and migrate virtual machines from one compute node to another.

The exercise will demonstrate the speed, efficiency, and low latency Open ROADM networks can provide in a disaster recovery scenario, says Fujitsu. The demonstration can be viewed at the UT Dallas booth (#3716) at SC18 November 13–15.
