Sales of WDM systems rise 15% year-over-year in third quarter 2018: Dell’Oro Group

Sales of WDM systems bounced back during the third quarter of 2018, reports Dell’Oro Group. The market research firm states optical transport WDM equipment revenues increased by 15% over the third quarter of 2017. Coherent wavelength shipments grew 30% as well, according to Dell’Oro’s latest "Optical Transport Quarterly Report."

Sales of WDM systems bounced back during the third quarter of 2018, reports Dell’Oro Group. The market research firm states optical transport WDM equipment revenues increased by 15% over the third quarter of 2017. Coherent wavelength shipments grew 30% as well, according to Dell’Oro’s latest "Optical Transport Quarterly Report."

Optical transport systems sales declined 13% year-over-year in the second quarter of 2018, thanks in large measure to ZTE’s problems with the U.S. Department of Commerce (see “ZTE ban depresses 2Q18 optical network systems sales: Dell’Oro Group”).

“The optical market outperformed in the third quarter,” commented Jimmy Yu, vice president at Dell’Oro Group. “All of the growth was driven by rising demand for coherent wavelengths in metro and long-haul WDM systems. Shipment of 100-Gbps wavelengths continued to rise, but it was a newer, higher-speed wavelengths operating at 200 Gbps that truly moved the market revenue higher.”

Shipments of 100-Gbps wavelength gear climbed nearly 15% in the quarter, while shipments of technology for 200 Gbps and greater more than double year-on-year, Dell’Oro reports. Overall, much of the revenue growth came from sales in the Asia Pacific region. Huawei, Ciena, ZTE, and Nokia topped the market share leader board.

Dell’Oro’s “Optical Transport Quarterly Report” covers manufacturers’ revenue, average selling prices, and unit shipments (by speed including 40 Gbps, 100 Gbps, 200 Gbps, and 400 Gbps). The report tracks DWDM long-haul terrestrial, WDM metro, multiservice multiplexers (SONET/SDH), optical switches, optical packet platforms, and data center interconnect (metro and long haul).
