Calix (NYSE:CALX) announced five new fiber-based municipal broadband deployments in Colorado, Iowa and Tennessee. The company says it has now deployed in more than 50 community-owned networks in 23 states.

In Independence, IA, Independence Light and Power, Telecommunications (ILP, T) is moving from HFC to move to an all-fiber network for the delivery of high-speed data, video, voice and managed WiFi services to all of its business and residential subscribers. The network is supported by Calix 725GE ONTs and E7-2 Modular Access Systems.

"Every week, we are adding more and more broadband subscribers who are looking for a robust and reliable broadband service," said Josh Vandenburg, network engineer at ILP, T. "By moving to the Calix solutions, we are now able to seamlessly transition to fiber, which allows us to roll out new services and fully utilize the 10 gigabit per second ring that runs through Independence. Now with the ability to offer managed WiFi and the foundation in place for the next generation of broadband services, the sky is the limit for our community."

The other new deployments include:

  • Rio Blanco County, CO, is deploying Calix GigaCenters, GigaPoints, and the E7-20 Access System to serve every premises in the communities of Meeker and Rangely while wireless towers will provide service in the rural areas of the county.

  • Osage Municipal Utilities (OMU) in Osage, IA, is retiring its HFC network in favor of GPON to deliver high-speed broadband and voice services via Calix 844E GigaCenters, 803G GigaPoints, and E7-2s.
