Comcast (NASDAQ:CMCSA) announced that, since launching its Xfinity Communities unit last year, more than 1 million residents of multifamily housing properties (condos, apartments, etc.) across 37 states are using Xfinity services delivered by the MSO's Advanced Communities Network (ACN).
Xfinity Communities sells, markets and maintains ACN to deliver high-speed Internet, Xfinity X1 video, WiFi, home security and automation and phone services. The service, which can be implemented via DOCSIS or fiber to various endpoints, also features dedicated points of contact for specific MDU customers.
The Comcast sub-group was formed after internal discussion about how best to serve the multiple dwelling unit (MDU) market: via the company's business services arm or its residential arm, said Michael Slovin, vice president, Xfinity Communities. Though the service is partly a business-to-business proposition in that it's being sold to property owners and management companies, it's also residential in that the end users are the residents rather than the landlords.
"The reality today is that residents take into consideration whether properties have access to the latest Internet, WiFi, TV, home automation and voice technologies when deciding where to live," Slovin said. "As a result, many leading apartment owners and property managers have looked to us to provide the cutting-edge services they need to keep their residents happy and stay ahead of the competition."
