AT&T (NYSE:T) has launched its AT&T Fiber symmetrical Internet service in parts of 12 new metro areas. The fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) service is now available in parts of 84 metro areas in 21 states. Available speed tiers include 100 Mbps, 300 Mbps and 1 Gbps.

The new launches include:

  • Amarillo, Beaumont and Waco, TX
  • Bowling Green, KY
  • Florence, SC
  • Gainesville, Panama City and Pensacola, FL
  • Lake Charles, LA
  • Northeast Mississippi, including Hattiesburg
  • Topeka, KS

The telco says it added more than 3 million locations for residential FTTH service in 2018, for a total of more than 10 million. AT&T plans to reach at least 14 million locations by mid-2019. The fiber network also reaches more than 2 million business customer locations, AT&T says.

In part, the ongoing fiber expansion is intended to support 5G mobile services by connecting wireless towers or small cells.
