Charter Communications (NASDAQ:CHTR) has expanded its DOCSIS 3.1-based gigabit Internet footprint to an additional 14 million homes in parts of eight states, including:

  • California
  • Texas
  • Nebraska
  • Wisconsin
  • Ohio
  • Pennsylvania
  • New York
  • North Carolina

The company says its Spectrum Internet Gig service is now available to more that 23 million homes, with plans to deploy the service to nearly its entire 41-state footprint this year. Charter first launched the service last year on Oahu and added seven more markets by year's end, including Austin and San Antonio, TX; Kansas City, MO; Cincinnati; New York City; and Raleigh-Durham and Charlotte, NC. Spectrum Internet Gig, with an actual maximum downstream speed of 940 Mbps, is now available to almost half of all the homes where Spectrum Internet is sold, Charter says.

"Spectrum's state-of-the-art, fiber-rich network allows us to deploy dramatically faster broadband speeds, including gigabit connections, broadly and rapidly," said Tom Rutledge, Charter chairman and CEO. "As consumer demands for bandwidth and capacity grow, our world-class network is best-positioned to meet these demands, today and into the future."

Charter has also boosted the starting speed of its Spectrum Internet package to 100 Mbps in more than 130 additional communities. That means thousands of current Spectrum Internet customers automatically saw their speeds increase by 66% or more (some even tripled), with no change in price. Charter says the starting speed of Spectrum Internet is at least 100 Mbps in more than 99% of the communities it serves.
