RCN announced the immediate availability of DOCSIS 3.1-based gigabit Internet in the suburbs of Philadelphia. The new speeds will be available throughout the company's Delaware County service areas, including Clifton Heights, Darby, Drexel Hill, Upper Darby and Yeadon. RCN says the service, which starts at $69.99/month for 12 months, is the first in the Philadelphia suburbs.

RCN recently launched DOCSIS 3.1-based gigabit service in its New York City, Washington DC and Chicago markets.

"RCN has always been known for staying ahead of the curve, and we will continue to do so as technologies develop," said Sanford Ames Jr., senior vice president and general manager of RCN Philadelphia. "1 gigabit speeds are what our customers need to keep with up the Internet of Things and increasing bandwidth needs in the home. Our recent roll-outs in New York, DC and Chicago have garnered massive interest from our customers, proving that RCN is filling a gap that's long needed filling."

In other RCN news, the company announced the immediate availability of 330 Mbps Internet in Pennsylvania's Lehigh Valley in Bethlehem, Easton, Allentown and surrounding communities. The new service, which starts at $59.99/month for 12 months, features speeds of more than double its current offering.
