Harmonic (NASDAQ:HLIT) announced new capabilities for its ViBE 4K video encoder that are intended to deliver UltraHD low-latency, high-bitrate HEVC 4:2:2 10-bit encoding for 4K contribution applications. The ViBE 4K encoder is one of several solutions that have joined the Harmonic product family as a result of the company's recent acquisition of Thomson Video Networks.

The upgrade is designed to reduce encoder latency to less than a second and increase maximum encoding bitrate to 160 Mbps. In addition to HEVC UltraHD, the ViBE 4K solution now also supports 1080p50/59.94 HEVC encoding to enable customers to use a single encoder for both UltraHD and HD applications.

The new contribution capabilities for the ViBE 4K encoder are expected to be available in June. Harmonic will showcase it at the 2016 NAB Show.

Other Harmonic technologies being featured at NAB will include:

  • Software-Based Media Processing
  • UltraHD
  • Transcoding
  • Virtual Reality
  • ATSC Broadcasting
  • Edge Playout and Regionalization
  • Media Storage
