HEVC Advance, an independent licensing administrator company, has formed the HEVC Advance patent pool. The patent pool is intended to provide a transparent means for accessing and licensing HEVC essential patents. The company hopes to attract intellectual property holders, with more than 500 patents for the video compression standard expected to be available for license at launch, and the number expected to grow significantly.
The initial list of licensors is expected to include GE, Technicolor, Dolby, Philips and Mitsubishi Electric. Royalty rates and licensing terms are expected to bee available in the second quarter, and the patent pool is expected to formally launch in the third quarter of 2015.
