Kinetic has launched a new free digital literacy program that allows anyone to learn how to use computers and navigate the online world.
Created by Kinetic’s learning and development team, the online Kinetic Digital Literacy Program includes 12 video courses in three categories—essential computer skills, basic office software skills and daily technology skills.
“Our goal is to help people know the basics of how technology works and how to use it confidently,” said Mark Saffell, senior director of learning and development at Kinetic.
Since many people may not have computers at home, Kinetic’s program will initially provide the courses at public libraries. This will allow participants to use the library computers, made possible through its relationship with the American Library Association.
Saffell said it will “start with libraries in mostly rural communities where we offer high-speed fiber internet to households and small businesses.”
The program, launched to coincide with the start of a new school year, also supports Kinetic’s commitment to serving underserved people, thereby reducing the “digital divide.”
Each course is designed for success by children and adults—the average time to complete a course range from five to 12 minutes. Courses can be free anytime by visiting Kinetic’s digital literacy website.
Learners do not need to register or be current Kinetic customers. Also, they can take the courses as many times as they like.
“No one is born with digital literacy skills, but everyone needs them to succeed in today’s world,” Small said. “This free program helps learners develop computer and online skills essential for digital success.”
Kinetic is just one of many providers that are developing digital literacy programs.
Comcast awarded $50,000 to The Literacy Alliance of Fort Wayne, Indiana, to advance economic opportunity through digital literacy and broadband adoption to help more Hoosiers get online. The company also donated 250 laptops to the Fort Wayne Housing Authority, Fort Wayne Boys and Girls Club, St. Joseph Mission, Fort Wayne Urban League, and the Literacy Alliance of Fort Wayne.
