According to the Diffusion Group, live sports will play a major role in determining the pace and extent of the ongoing shift from legacy to broadband TV. The research house expects a tenfold increase in viewing of sports video over broadband in the next decade, from less than half an hour a week in 2014 to four hours in 2025.
Today, TDG says, sports viewing via broadband is under-represented relative to sports viewing on legacy TV for two main reasons: existing long-term sports broadcasting agreements, and fears of disrupting the massive flow of money associated with the status quo. The research house expects the gap to gradually close over the next decade, particularly as multiscreen viewing increases.
