Accelecom, Mountain Comprehensive Care Center enhance rural Kentucky health care

Aug. 18, 2023
The new collaboration will facilitate new broadband connectivity to satisfy emerging telehealth applications.

Accelecom, a Louisville, Kentucky-based business service provider, is collaborating with Mountain Comprehensive Care Center (MCCC) to enhance connectivity across MCCC's extensive network of locations, enabling better healthcare services for rural communities.

MCCC operates diverse facilities, including outpatient behavioral health clinics, primary medical care clinics, therapeutic foster care offices, residential addiction treatment facilities, crisis stabilization units, and more. Additionally, MCCC runs essential programs like the Healing Program for Survivors of Sexual Assault and Interpersonal Violence, addressing critical needs in the community.

Accelecom will provide fiber-based services over its optical network to support MCCC’s ever-growing capacity demands.

One of the critical initiatives where Accelecom's connectivity plays a pivotal role is expanding telehealth services—a necessary service for patients living in rural areas. Telehealth and Webex video conferencing have become increasingly crucial for MCCC's operations, and a high-speed internet connection is essential for their successful implementation. The fiber-based services will also support MCCC's Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system requirements for seamless access and file uploads.

Dave Webb, IT Director at MCCC, said Accelecom's services will impact its operations and patient care. "Accelecom is providing us with a high-speed fiber internet service at a fraction of the cost of other carriers in our rural footprint,” he said. “This improves all our communications and systems access and makes using our EMR application easier.”

For its part, Accelecom has been making a name for itself across multiple enterprise verticals—agriculture, carrier, education, government, and healthcare.

Earlier this month, Accelecom began a network upgrade for Bellarmine University.

The service provider established 10 Gbps connectivity between the university’s campus and the Flexential data center in Louisville as part of an infrastructure expansion plan to support the university’s new minor in Esports and their Esports Center. In March 2023, Bellarmine hosted Kentucky’s first Esports competition with over 170 students from 15 Kentucky area high schools.

Besides reducing network latency, the new connectivity will help Bellarmine University address its students’ ever-growing bandwidth requirements.
