18 September 2003 Oriskany, NY Lightwave -- Responding to customer demand, Fiber Instrument Sales Inc. (FIS) is now manufacturing the once-popular Lab Splice in its facility in Oriskany, NY.
"When the original manufacturer of the Lab Splice discontinued production two years ago, many of our customers were disappointed," explains FIS president Frank Giotto. The Lab Splice was unique, he says, because it could be reused hundreds of times to quickly splice bare fibers. It was especially useful in laboratory environments where equipment is changed around frequently.
The company decided to "take the bull by the horns" and invest the $80,000 required to begin manufacturing the device themselves. "We felt it was our job to fulfill customer needs, and manufacturing the Lab Splice ourselves appeared to be the only option," admits Giotto.
FIS is now manufacturing what it claims is a re-engineered Lab Splice; it is better and more affordable. At $5.95 each, the FIS Lab Splice is priced much lower than its predecessor.
"We're very proud of our engineering team and the manufacturing capabilities at FIS," adds Giotto. "Despite the downturn in the fiber-optics industry, FIS remains financially strong and is eager to invest in new ventures such as this."
