MetaSwitch and Wave7 Optics team to provide voice-over-packet services in FTTP deployments
20 October 2003 Fort Wayne IN Lightwave--Wave7 Optics, a developer of optical access equipment for the fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) residential and business markets, today announced a joint solution with MetaSwitch that will allow service providers to offer superior Class 5 end-to-end voice-over-packet services, either as part of a triple-play voice, video and data offering or as a separate service. The two companies made the announcement at the 2003 Midwest Telecom Expo, the multi-state telecommunications exposition and conference sponsored by the Indiana, Michigan and Ohio Telephone Associations.
After completing extensive interoperability testing between the MetaSwitch VP3500 and the Wave7 Optics Last Mile Link, the product combination is currently being evaluated by several network operators. "Service providers building fiber networks want to be able to fully exploit their infrastructure by deploying packet voice services," said John Lazar, MetaSwitch Vice President of Sales and Marketing. "The MetaSwitch VP3500's carrier-class voice capabilities and services are complemented superbly by Wave7 Optics' strong focus on efficient Layer 3 bandwidth management and QoS [quality of service]."
"The Last Mile Link already features uncompressed (G.711) full 64-kbit/sec voice-over-packet service at a 'lifeline' QoS level," said Emmanuel Vella, Wave7 Optics' chief marketing officer. "Adding the MetaSwitch VP3500 to the Last Mile Link or vice versa allows carriers to provide voice services with all of the intelligence associated with a traditional Class 5 switch, such as call forwarding and caller ID."
Wave7 Optics offers an "intelligent" passive optical network (PON) system. The IP- and Ethernet-standards based Last Mile Link product suite provides triple-play services at symmetrical speeds up to 500 Mbits/sec to residential, business and multi-tenant or multi-dwelling building customers. The Last Mile Link is the only optical access system being shipped to customers today that truly provides IP video and interactive RF video, supporting both upstream and downstream signals through Wave7 Optics patent pending RF return technology, according to the company.
The MetaSwitch VP3500 is a broadband-enabled next generation Class-5 Switch with over 30 deployments. It supports VoIP, VoATM and GR-303 as well as advanced Web-based subscriber services. Service providers are able to simultaneously serve customers in multiple calling areas with over 95 Class-5 features and services. The MetaSwitch VP3500 is easy to deploy and scales from 400 to over 250,000 subscribers in a single rack. Built-in CALEA support enables service providers to satisfy lawful intercept requirements.
