TeleGeography: Long-haul Ethernet ain’t cheap

March 17, 2011
New data from TeleGeography’s Ethernet Pricing Service reveal that while Ethernet over SONET or SDH can offer guaranteed latency and restoration times, those attributes can come at a steep price.

New data from TeleGeography’s Ethernet Pricing Service reveal that while Ethernet over SONET or SDH can offer guaranteed latency and restoration times, those attributes can come at a steep price. The market-research firm says it surveyed key routes and found that 100-Mbps Ethernet over SONET/SDH services cost an average of 50% more than Ethernet over MPLS (EoMPLS) services.

Telegeography says that while Ethernet over SONET/SDH cost more than EoMPLS on all routes, the markup was particularly high in the U.S., where a 100-Mbps Ethernet service between Miami and New York delivered over SDH/SONET cost more than twice as much as EoMPLS.

The accompanying chart offers a more detailed comparison.

TeleGeography’s Ethernet Pricing Service benchmarks the price of long-haul Ethernet service for large enterprises. The service provides detailed Ethernet pricing data by carrier, by port capacity, and by presentation on over 60 key routes.
