Dell’Oro: Fiber-optic network, mobile upgrades boost service provider router market in second quarter 2011
The worldwide service provider router market grew 26% in the second quarter of 2011 due to strong demand from the North American and Asia Pacific regions, according to a new report from Dell’Oro Group. The market research firm cites fiber-optic broadband initiatives in China and mobile backhaul projects in the United States as the main drivers for the positive performance.
"Mobile backhaul has been a key market driver for several quarters, but this was the first quarter where we saw a substantial effect from the China broadband upgrade," said Shin Umeda, vice president at Dell'Oro Group. "From a vendor perspective, Alcatel-Lucent jumped to an early lead in mobile backhaul, and Huawei is doing very well in its home China market, but we would expect Cisco and Juniper to pursue these opportunities as well."
For the quarter, Cisco was the sales leader, growing 20% year on year. The next three sales leaders included Juniper Networks (23% growth year on year), Alcatel-Lucent (65% growth year on year), and Huawei (60% growth year on year).
Dell'Oro’s Routers Quarterly Report offers coverage of the service provider core and edge and enterprise router markets for current and historical time periods.
