ElectroniCast: Filter-based DCMs to grow 33% over next five years

Jan. 10, 2011
JANUARY 10, 2011 -- Paced by the U.S. and Asia-Pacific markets, consumption of filter-based chromatic dispersion compensation modules (DCMs) should grow 33% between 2010 and 2015, according to a new report from market research and technology forecast consultancy ElectroniCast Consultants.

“With the use of dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) technology, especially in high-capacity systems operating at speeds of 10 Gbps and beyond, chromatic dispersion effects can become a real problem. Additionally, DWDM has relied on wavelengths in the 1550-nm window where dispersion is high,” said Stephen Montgomery, president of international business at ElectroniCast.

The new report presents ElectroniCast’s 2010-2015 market review and forecast of the consumption (value, quantity, and average prices) of filter-based fiber-optic chromatic dispersion DCMs in optical communication networking. These DCMs typically leverage either fiber Bragg gratings or etalon filters.

The report also offers forecast data of the worldwide consumption value of electronic dispersion compensators (EDCs) and dispersion compensating fiber (DCF).

“The worldwide consumption value of filter-based chromatic dispersion compensators is forecast to increase at an average annual growth rate of nearly 33% during the 2010-2015 timeframe. The American region is forecast to continue to demonstrate strong annual growth, with its fair share of new higher data rate and WDM-based optical link deployment; however, the Asia Pacific region is growing at a faster rate. The EMEA region is forecast with a moderate to strong annual consumption value growth (2010-2015),” Montgomery concluded.
