JUNE 15, 2010 -- Xtera Communications, Inc. has acquired UK-based Polariq Ltd., a company specializing in technology polarization mode dispersion (PMD) mitigation.
"PMD and polarization phenomena have been lifelong issues for the optical communications industry," said Stuart Barnes, founder and chief operating officer of Polariq. "By applying its technology to polarization multiplexing (PM), Polariq's unique patented solution enables more channels per fiber, effectively increasing the overall capacity."
Polarization multiplexing is an essential element of the approach most companies are taking toward coherent detection enabled 40- and 100-Gbps transport. For example, the Optical Internetworking Forum has focused on polarization multiplexed quadrature phase-shift keying for its 100G Long Haul DWDM specification work.
"With Polariq's innovative PM solution, Xtera's customers will be able to take full advantage of maximizing the capacity of their submarine and terrestrial fiber cable systems," said Jon Hopper, president and chief executive officer of Xtera. "This technology reinforces our global leadership in providing leading edge high capacity solutions and enables Xtera to deliver efficient 40G and 100G systems."
