MAY 17, 2010 UPDATED 3:03 pm -- Zarlink Semiconductor (TSX:ZL) has sold the assets of its Optical Products group to Tyco Electronics (NYSE: TEL) for approximately $15 million in cash.
The group developed and marketed multi-channel laser drivers and both transimpedance and limiting amplifiers; fiber-optic modules and transceivers, including 12-channel devices and QSFPs; and active optical cables.
Ed Goffin, marketing communications at Zarlink, told Lightwave in an email that in addition to the products, approximately 60 to 70 employees will transfer to Tyco Electronics as well. "The majority of these employees are based in Jarfalla, Sweden, along with a small operation in Phoenix," Goffin wrote.
"The sale of our Optical Products group follows our strategy of narrowing our focus to markets where we can maintain a strong leadership position, while improving operational efficiencies to build a more profitable business," said Kirk Mandy, president and CEO of Zarlink Semiconductor. "This transaction enables us to target our sales and product development efforts on network timing, medical wireless, and line circuit initiatives to expand our presence in these markets, build deeper customer relationships and address immediate and long-term revenue growth opportunities."
