IP-VPNs have overtaken ATM and Frame Relay, says RHK

August 12, 2004 South San Francisco -- IP-VPNs are as common as private line services and are now seen as superior to ATM and Frame Relay across a range of service attributes, reports market research and advisory services company RHK Inc.

The conclusions are based on a major survey of North American IT managers, who viewed IP-VPNs as being superior for total cost of ownership and scalability and better for reliability, performance, and security.

"This is potentially great news for new market entrants and for service providers wanting to use a single network to support all data services," explains program director Roz Roseboro of RHK. "Reliability and security had been seen as the Achilles heel of IP-VPN; now those perceived vulnerabilities are becoming strengths." However, service providers should not be popping champagne corks just yet, she cautions. The survey showed that IT managers who managed their own VPNs had a more positive view of the service than those who outsourced the service to Service Providers.
