Zhejiang Telecom selects Alcatel's optical multi-service transport equipment

August 2, 2004 Paris -- Alcatel announced today that it has been awarded a contract by Zhejiang Telecom, a subsidiary of China Telecom, to deploy optical metro transport networks in the provincial cities of Wenzhou and Jiaxin, in Eastern China. The contract was won through Alcatel Shanghai Bell, Alcatel's flagship Chinese company.

The contract was won through Alcatel Shanghai Bell, Alcatel's flagship Chinese company.

Deployment of the new 10-Gbit/sec transmission networks will enable Zhejiang Telecom to better satisfy the increasing demand for high-speed, bandwidth-hungry Ethernet services from its enterprise customers, particularly in vertical markets such as banking and financial companies, reports the carrier. The project, which should increase capacity of Zhejiang Telecom's transport network and enable the delivery of advanced broadband, revenue-generating services, is expected to be completed in September 2004.

"As a leading equipment vendor in China, Alcatel provides its customer with end-to-end optical networking solutions to help them meet market challenges and expand their business," contends Romano Valussi, president of Alcatel's optical networks activities. "This contract further strengthens our position in China's optical networking market where Alcatel is working closely with Chinese carriers to help maximize their network investments and deliver networking efficiencies."

The deployment will use the full range of Alcatel's next-generation data-aware SDH Optical Multi-Service Node systems. The networks, which will be managed by the Alcatel 1350 management suite, will also provide a foundation for the smooth introduction of video-based applications enabled after the commercial introduction of 3G and next-generation networks (NGN).
