Kailight Photonics and Heinrich-Hertz-Institute partner to develop 40G all-optical signal regeneration
September 14, 2004 Dallas-- Heinrich-Hertz-Institut (HHI), an applied-research institute located in Berlin, and Kailight Photonics, developers of all-optical signal regeneration and wavelength conversion technology, announced today their agreement to jointly test and design Kailight's Tunable All-optical Signal Regeneration (TASR). HHI is a subsidiary of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, which maintains over 80 research units at more than 40 different locations throughout Germany
Kailight's TASR optical modules provide fast-switching, tunable, all-optical solutions designed to operate within optical regenerators, switches, routers, add/drop multiplexers and crossconnects at bit-rates ranging from 1 to 42.5 Gbits/sec. This benchmark product line also delivers bit-rate and protocol transparency while dramatically reducing network transmissions costs.
Under the agreement HHI will support testing for 40-Gbit/sec all-optical 2R (re-amplification and re-shaping) applications using Kailight's patented technology. HHI will also work with Kailight to offer an all-optical 3R (re-amplification, re-shaping and re-synchronization) design option to the current TASR module. This includes integration of HHI's patented 40-GHz OptoClock, which upgrades 2R regeneration to 3R functionality for improved stability in 40-Gbit/sec ultra long-haul transmission.
"The demand from large systems vendors for 40-Gbit/sec all-optical solutions has greatly increased over the past year," said Sagie Tsadka, CEO of Kailight. "In fact, the testing criterion for this project is being set by a large systems vendor."
