June 14, 2004 Fort Lauderdale, FL--ECI Telecom today announced that Vermont Telephone Company (VTel), the largest independent telephone company in Vermont, has chosen its XDM metro and regional converged optical network platform for WDM, SONET and Ethernet. ECI's XDM allows VTel to reduce significantly the number of systems deployed, decrease network complexity, and slash overall cost of network ownership while accelerating the introduction of new services.

The XDM single architecture metro solution enables VTel to eliminate separate WDM, SONET and Ethernet equipment, thereby significantly reducing capex and opex. Additionally, the XDM solution provides VTel with integrated regional optical capabilities that allow for longer distances without electrical regeneration, making it possible to reach more customers cost-effectively.

"After evaluating numerous platforms, ECI's XDM clearly stood out," commented Norm Koch, general manager, Vermont Telephone. "ECI's single platform solution with end-to-end network management of multi network layers and technologies eliminated the need for multiple systems to provide the same features. This integration provided a significant life cycle cost reduction."

With XDM, VTel can introduce new broadband services to business and residential customers, including very high-speed optical Internet access, Ethernet Virtual LANs (VLAN) and optical private lines. Additionally, XDM's unique "Build As You Grow" architecture provides VTel with service choices allowing for instant addition of new broadband services at any site and at any time using its existing XDM platform. This drastically improves VTel's flexibility and scalability.

"VTel understood the importance of optimizing their current network to support the new services their customers required," commented Emanuel Nachum, vice president, marketing, Optical Networks, ECI Telecom North America. "Our XDM converged optical solution provides the flexibility needed to respond quickly to a more sophisticated marketplace."

The XDM platform converges intelligent optical networking capabilities with advanced data functionality including Ethernet Layer 2, SONET/SDH, CWDM and DWDM. Offering a modular approach to building next generation services, the XDM enables carriers to maximize investment in existing infrastructure while generating new revenue opportunities.
