February 27, 2004 Ramat Gan, Israel -- BroadLight Inc., supplier of communication semiconductors and optical transceivers that enable Fiber-to-the-Premise (FTTP) passive optical networks (PONs), has been issued a U.S. patent for receiving burst mode traffic over PONs. US patent #6,686,799, "Burst Mode Limiter-Amplifier," is a key element to enable burst traffic transport over PONs.
"Our current BPON [broadband PON] OLT [optical line terminal] transceiver uses this patent successfully," says Raanan Ivry, BroadLight's vice president for Analog Design and the patent inventor. "This patent, coupled with few pending patents on burst mode technology, emphasizes BroadLight superior technology in the emerging BPON market," he asserts.
One of the biggest technology barriers in BPON implementation is receiving burst mode data from different optical network terminals (ONTs). BroadLight claims it has overcome this barrier by offering an integrated BPON OLT transceiver and BPON OLT Controller, thereby significantly cutting the integration effort of the access vendor.
