3/31/00 Primus Telecommunications Group Inc. (McLean, VA) has acquired New England-based Internet service provider (ISP) Shore.Net (Lynn, MA) for $43 million. The acquisition of Shore.Net, which has a data center in the Boston area, gives Primus "full-service" ISP capabilities and its first data center and Web-hosting facility in the U.S.

Primus is targeting domestic small and medium-sized enterprises and high-growth dot-coms to offer them application service provider and e-business services. With Shore.Net, Primus said it is now a single-source provider of managed co-location, Web hosting, streaming media, content delivery, e-commerce, broadband access, security and consulting services.

Primus intends to expand Shore.Net's data center and to build new and larger Internet data centers on both coasts for national coverage. The build out will be in conjunction with Primus' various partners.

Primus owns and operates a network of owned and leased transmission facilities, including over 150 Internet protocol points-of-presence and Web peering partnerships worldwide. It also has interests in 23 undersea fiber optic cable systems, along with owning 19 international gateway and domestic switches, a satellite earth station and various operating alliances.
